Small Metal Part Cosmetic Defect AOI
A cosmetic-defect AOI for small metal parts, built from three sections: a loading machine, an AOI machine and an unloading machine. A robot picks up six parts at a time from the tray and places them in a fixture for secondary positioning; the parts then go through 2D inspection of the side and bottom surfaces, are rotated 180° for pillar bottom and side inspection, and move to a top-surface fixture for top surface, R-corner and sidewall inspection. The unloading module sorts the parts into OK and NG trays.

- Line composition
- Loading machine, AOI machine, unloading machine
- Suitable products
- Small elongated metal parts with pillars (two part types shown)
- Inspection type
- 2D inspection of side and bottom surfaces; pillar bottom and side; top surface, R-corner and sidewall
- Defect types (A surface)
- Scratch, dent, soft edge, large & small R edge, structure incomplete, shiny line, uneven brushing line, hair line
- Defect types (R chamfer)
- Vibrated cutter mark at R edge, damage at R edge
- Defect types (bottom surface)
- Edge blur, dent and scratch at piston tip; 0.16 hole blur; 0.16 hole damage; cutter mark, crash and scratch at bottom
- Defect types (sidewall)
- Scratch, discoloration and crimp edge at sidewall; structure incomplete; vertical and horizontal cutter marks; foreign matter, scratch, damage and cutter mark at pillar groove; damage, scratch and cutter mark at pillar
- Loading/unloading method
- Operator loads a batch of trays into the loading bin; robot picks up 6 parts at a time; unloading module sorts parts into OK and NG trays
- Mechanism
- Secondary positioning in the fixture; motor rotates the parts 180°
- Process
- Tray loading → robot pick (6 parts) → fixture and secondary positioning → side and bottom 2D inspection → 180° rotation → pillar bottom and side inspection → top-surface fixture → top surface, R-corner and sidewall inspection → OK/NG sorting

Silent clips from our 3D machine animations. While a clip is playing, you can pause it from the corner button.

3D animation A row of nozzles picks the parts up from the fixture; the view then swings to the cameras, where the parts pass through for side and bottom inspection.
3D animation Unloading: the nozzles lower one by one and set the parts into the pockets of the tray.
